Welcome to our weekly blog!

Happy February half term everyone!

Star of the Week

Dylan has been awarded Star of the Week this week for being a Thinkatops (Thinker) and a Risk-takerocus (Risk-taker). Dylan has been thinking about what phonics knowledge he needs to use in order to blend the sounds together to read words. Dylan has been brave by not letting challenges get in his way. Well done Dylan! We hope you have a lovely week with Mr Bucky and we can't wait to hear about your adventures.

Phonics and Reading Challenge Friday

This week, we have continued to work really hard with our phonics.

Green Stars have been looking at 'Ee', hearing the initial sound in words and working on their blending and writing skills.

Red Stars have been focusing on the sound 'Gg'. They have been thinking of words that begin with the sound, blending words using all their phonic knowledge and practising their writing.

Blue Stars have been focusing on the sound 'Bb/bb'. They have been thinking of words that begin and contain the sound, using their blending skills and practising their writing. They have also been practising reading words from their reading challenge.

Here are some of the sentences we have been reading this week as part of our Reading Challenge:

Always remember we need a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, finger spaces in between each word and a full stop at the end.

Home learning (optional): Practice your Reading Challenge or your phonics.

Next week: Green Stars: Hh     Red Stars: Oo    Blue Stars: Recap (set 1 and set 2)

Story of the Week: Kipper's Birthday by Mick Inkpen

Talk 4 Writing

This week, we continued the story series 'Kipper' by Mick Inkpen. Mr Rob came to read 'Kipper's Toybox' to the children, which they loved. The children are really enjoying the Kipper book series, which is also a TV series. You can watch Kipper stories on YouTube using this link.

Maths

We use the Chinese Zodiac story to learn about ordinal numbers e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd... We have continued with our measure element and recapped weight this week. We decided as a class whether an object was heavier, lighter or balanced another object using the weighing scales. The children have also done a lot of counting and number writing this week as part of their assessment.  Here are some pictures:

Home learning (optional): Play race games e.g. running, balancing. Who came 1st? Who came 2nd? etc. This will help with their understanding of ordinal numbers.

Extension: Practice writing numbers at home. How high can they go?

Next week: Counting and writing numbers. Measure - Capacity (full, empty, half-full, half-empty, fill)

Unit of Inquiry (UOI)

Unit: How the world works

Central Idea: Materials behave and interact in certain ways, which determine how people use them.

We are currently in the 'Sorting out' part of our inquiry. The children went on a material hunt in small groups to see if they could find glass, plastic, wood, metal, paper and fabric. Here are some pictures:

Next week, the children will continue to look further into materials and how to identify them. We will be exploring plastic, wood, fabric, metal, glass and paper. We will also begin to explore whether materials are waterproof or not.

Home learning (optional): Go on a material hunt. What materials can you find? Can you describe their properties?

Physical Education (PE)

This week, our learners have been learning about hand-eye coordination skills by using different games that demand handling skills and eye perception, such as the "Shell game" with some plastic cups. In addition, we have been learning about striking skills, such as using an implement to control a balloon in the air or a ball (e.g table tennis ball and badminton shuttlecock).

Thai

Happy Chinese New Year! Students are excited to learn another culture from Chinese New Year. They were joyful learning Thai words from Chinese language and they intended to do red envelopes อั่งเปา. Students also enjoyed dancing Chinese songs.

Chinese New Year celebrations (Thursday):

Here are some other things we have been getting up to:

Library

Library day is on Monday. This means your child can change their books and bring them home for the week. We would advise to bring them back to school by Friday to ensure that your child's book will be changed. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact me.

*As we are not in school this Monday, we will arrange to take your children to the library on Wednesday.

Story Telling

This week, we showed the children a couple of videos of children from K2 storytelling at home. Patrick and Bin, we are really proud of you both for making these videos. Well done! If your child would like to make a story video at home to share with the class, please send it in an email.

The children have enjoyed their specialist lessons this week. The specialist teachers your child will be taught by are:

Please feel free to add your own pictures and videos onto Tapestry of your child. This can be either them practising their learning or playing.

Line Group

The Line Group is for general queries. If you have any concerns or questions you wish to ask privately, please either send a separate line message to Ms Patty or Ms Oil. Alternatively, please send me an email.

Ms Patty and Ms Oil will be unavailable on Line from Friday 12th February until Tuesday

Any other business

Reading Challenge - If your child has started the Reading Challenge, please make sure they are practising at home with your support. If you require support or guidance, please contact us. If your child has independently read all their keywords without any support from yourself, please take a video and upload to Tapestry as evidence. (Thank you Patrick's mum for this idea!)

Swimming - We will start swimming again next week but this will now be on Tuesday afternoons. Your child does not need to come to school in their swimming things and we will change them at lunchtime to help prepare them. Friday mornings will now be a PE day.

Masks - As outlined in a Line message this wee and as per our Covid-19 policy, it is essential that you are sending your child into school with a face mask or face shield as well as a spare in case it becomes damaged or dirty. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

Next Week:

Book of the Week - Kipper's Birthday by Mick Inkpen

Sound of the Week - Green Stars: Hh    Red Stars: Oo   Blue Stars: Recap set 1 and 2.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Kind regards,

Ms.Charlie
